SC Referees Excel at 2010 US Youth Soccer Region 3 Competition
South Carolina teams did well at the recent US Youth Soccer Region 3 Competition. You can read about their successes on their web site at www.scysa.org. However, South Carolina Referees and Assessors also had a very good year at the tournament.
SC Youth Soccer and SC Referees send upgraded Referees and Assessors each year to the Regional Competition. This year, the competition was held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the following 10 Referees and 3 Assessors were chosen to attend:
James Boswell (Grade 7); Brian Bozard (Grade 7); Jeremy Brooks (Grade 8);
Matthew Campbell (Grade 7); Fred Glasgow (Grade 7); Jeffrey Hearn (Grade 7);
Honorio Ojeda (Grade 9); Rick Rogers (Grade 7); Marion Shull (Grade 7); Dustin
Thorn (Grade 6); Fred Bieber (State Assessor); Bob Correia (State Assessor); and
Richards Roddey (National Assessor).
Other state associations also send Referees and Assessors, and, in total, more than 180 officials attended the event from the 12 participating state associations. All officials are evaluated on their performance during the six days of the competition, and the top Referees, Assistant Referees, and Assessors are announced at the end of the event. Some officials are also selected to attend the National Challenge Cup Finals, and the National President’s Cup.
This year, SC Referees had a very good year, earning 4 coveted “Top Assistant Referee” awards, one “Top Referee” award, and one selection to the National Challenge Cup. The Assistant Referees earning awards as “Top Assistant Referees” were James Boswell, Brian Bozard, Matthew Campbell, and Fred Glasgow. James Boswell was selected to attend the National Challenge Cup as Assistant Referee. Dustin Thorn was selected as one of the “Top Referees” in the event.
South Carolina Referees were also well represented in the “knockout” rounds of the competition, earning 11 berths in the Quarter-Finals, 6 berths in the Semis and 6 in the Finals.
If you see members of the teams from SC that attended the Region 3 competition, please take the time to congratulate them for their successes. But don’t forget the Referees who also had a very good showing at this event.
